The Various Types of Domains

Not every name follows the same formula and rules. While the .com domain is the most popular, with usage accounting for about 46.5% of all websites in the world, there are others to choose from, such as .online and .store.

These are some of the most widely used domain types:

TLD: Top Level Domain
The name suggests, Top Level Domain or TLD is the top-level name in the Domain Name System (DNS) on the Internet. You can choose from thousands of TLDs, with the most popular ones being .com, .org, .net, and .edu.

The list of official TLDs is maintained by an organization called the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) and can be found here. The IANA notes that the TLD list also includes ccTLDs and gTLDs, which we’ll get to later.

ccTLD: Country Code Top Level Domain
The ccTLD uses only two letters based on international country codes, such as .us for the United States, .jp for Japan, and .id for Indonesia.

The typical users of ccTLDs are companies that create specialized sites for certain regions, and can show visitors that the site they are visiting is valid for their purpose.

gTLD: Generic Top Level Domain
Basicly, Generic Top Level Domains are TLDs that do not use country codes. Most of the gTLDs have a specific use, for example .edu for educational institution websites.

Well, you don’t have to meet certain requirements to register a gTLD, such as .com which is not always for commercial websites.

Examples of other gTLDs are .mil (military), .gov (government), .org (non-profits and organizations), and .net which was originally created for internet service providers (ISPs), but now you can use it in any field.
